Born on 26 December 1944, Mr Everson - whose son Hugh was the Springbok Sevens team’s physiotherapist from 2007 to 2024 - was also a brilliant sportsman and educator who was described as an inspirational human being who served his community with passion.

In his playing days, Mr Everson represented Thistle RFC and Griqualand West on the wing, and he was also a provincial sprint champion. He ploughed back as an administrator and senior referee in Griquas and the erstwhile SARU from 1975 to 1987.

A former teacher and later principal, Mr Everson served on the board of the Griqualand West Rugby Union after unity and from 2000 to 2005, he was the team manager of the union’s Vodacom and Currie Cup teams.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of one of South African Rugby’s most esteemed referees from the 1980s, Mr Aubrey Everson,” said Mr Alexander.

“A stalwart of Griqualand West, his dedication to the game and unwavering commitment to fairness on the field left an indelible mark on our sport.

“This morning, he was called to higher service. May his dear soul rest in peace and prise in glory and may light perpetual shine upon him.

“During this difficult time, we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Faith, children Hugh, Ashwin and Ashlyn, as well as other members of the Everson family and their loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, as we ask for comfort and strength from above.

“We honour his contributions and his memory, forever a respected figure within our rugby fraternity.”
