Their forwards were impressive in the opening two games, and while the team has yet to win a match, there are clear signs that they are improving from last season.
Ungerer, who scored tries in each of their matches so far and has become a key figure in the Isuzu Southern Kings set-up, said the backline needs to use the opportunities they create in order to register their first win before hitting the road for a batch of away games.
“Our forwards were brilliant last weekend and gave the backline good ball,” said Ungerer. “Our mauls also worked well and our scrums were great.
“It is fantastic to have that kind of ball to attack with. We owe our forwards a few tries this weekend.
“It makes my life a lot easier playing behind a great pack; and I know they have been putting in a lot of work to give us a similar performance, if not a better one this weekend. It is now time for the backs to step up and finish off those opportunities.”
While he expects a stern challenge from the visitors, Ungerer believes his team are on an upward curve, and that it won’t be long before they taste victory.
“The guys are very excited to register our first win,” he said. “This is our last home game before we get on the road, so we want to put in a great performance and earn a win.
“They (Ulster) wouldn’t have enjoyed their trip to Bloemfontein and they will be coming here hungry for a win.
“They are an experienced team, and their depth is incredible, so we know it isn’t going to be an easy game, but it is one we want to win.”
Ungerer’s form on the field comes directly from the confidence that coach Robbie Kempson has instilled in him, and the scrumhalf believes he has a vital role to play in building the team culture in the new coaching environment.
“Scoring a try is always lovely, but at the end of the day it goes on the scoreboard as a team try and that is all that matters,” said the player.
“The confidence that a coach instils in you is great to have on the field. Obviously you still are wary of making mistakes, but going into a game with confidence gives you the ability to express yourself. That is when rugby players play their best rugby.”
Of his goals for the season, Ungerer said: “Personally I would like to try to keep the starting jersey as long as possible. As a No 9, you want to be on the field, and while one understands there are times you need to be rotated or substituted, one always wants to play as much as possible.
“But I don’t want to set too many goals, I am just taking it one game at a time, and building the culture we have here at the Kings is key. There are a lot of youngsters coming in, so I’m just trying to help lift the Kings to become a formidable side.”
The match kicks off at 16h00, and will be broadcast on SuperSport 2.
