About

VODACOM SUPER RUGBY

Vodacom Super Rugby is a professional rugby union competition featuring teams from Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Japan. The Vodacom Bulls is South Africa’s most successful side with three titles, in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The competition has been dominated by New Zealand teams, who have won 16 times from 1996 to 2019. The competition format changed a few times - from the initial 12 teams to 14 in 2006, then to 15 in 2011 and to 18 a few years later. In 2018, three teams were dropped again, which left the competition with 15 teams.

The history

Vodacom Super Rugby started as the Super 12 in the 1996 season with 12 teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The Super 12 was established by SANZAAR after the sport became professional in 1995. The competition was built on Southern Hemisphere competitions dating back to the South Pacific Championship in 1986, with teams from a number of southern nations. The name was changed to Super 14 with the addition of two teams for the 2006 season, the Toyota Cheetahs and Western Force. With expansion to 15 teams in the three countries for the 2011 season, when the Melbourne Rebels joined the fray, the competition was rebranded as Vodacom Super Rugby (with no number). In 2016 three further teams, the Southern Kings from South Africa, Jaguares from Argentina and Sunwolves from Japan, joined the competition, playing in a new four-conference system.
